The Hidden Sound

When Nadine, from MGVP, invited me to an intimate mystery gig in Fremantle featuring a secret artist, I could not refuse.

The hundred ticket holders would only find out the secret location the day before the event, and the artist would be revealed at the last minute on the night.

On the night, Nadine and I gathered on a dimly lit street corner in Fremantle with other showgoers. We were then led through a car park, up a stairwell, passed a violinist, through a door, down a winding corridor, past another violinist, into an open space which was once the old Myer building (now MANY6160).

There was a buzz of anticipation in the air as guests chatted excitedly, knowing there was a night of surprises in store for us. Jarrad Seng, the creative director, said we would not be disappointed with the secret artist and boy, was he right!

Local electronic musician Sam Perry was the opening act, warming guests up with his cool tunes. Afterwards, we were ushered into an intimate space filled with vintage couches and chairs, rugs, floor cushions, hanging lights and old paintings. It was then that Jarrad announced that Kate Miller-Heidke was the mystery artist of the night.

The hundred guests that filled the beautiful space were mesmerised by Kate Miller-Heidke's operatic-pop voice. Her hour-long set featured mostly her new works from her fourth album O Vertigo!.Rock This Baby to Sleep was my favourite, memories and feelings flooding back from when I was away from my love in New York City.

This is the first of a series of intimate performances from local musicians in unconventional venues. The Hidden Sound was certainly a night to be remembered.
